Schad, Christian Biography
German painter who studied at the Munich Academy and immersed himself in the art life of the city before spending the war years in Switzerland, in touch with the Dada circle. Christian Shad made abstract photograms by placing objects on photographic paper and exposing the arrangement to light, calling them 'Schadographs', earlier, it seems, than Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy. From 1927 he was in Berlin where he painted strikingly cold and sophisticated portraits, becoming a prominent painter of the Neue Sachlichkeit category. During the Nazi period he abandoned oil painting and did not regain his eminence later when he returned to it.
